In a landmark recognition of El Salvador’s dramatic security improvements, the U.S. Department of State has officially lowered its travel advisory for the country to Level 1 — the lowest and safest designation available for international travel.
This update marks a significant shift from Level 2, reflecting a “very low level of risk” for U.S. citizens visiting El Salvador and placing the country among the world’s safest travel destinations. The announcement was made public this Tuesday and welcomed by U.S. Ambassador to El Salvador, William Duncan, as a milestone in the nation’s ongoing transformation.
“With today’s update, the Travel Advisory for El Salvador is moving from Level 2 to Level 1, recognizing the sustained progress in the area of citizen security and the improvement in overall security. A significant step forward,” Ambassador Duncan stated.
According to the U.S. State Department’s report, the decision follows a notable decline in gang-related crime and violence, outcomes attributed to the public security policies implemented by President Nayib Bukele’s administration. The advisory now encourages U.S. citizens to exercise normal precautions when visiting El Salvador — a guideline reserved for the safest travel destinations globally.
“Gang activity has decreased over the past three years. This has led to a reduction in violent crime and homicides. U.S. government employees working in El Salvador are authorized to travel throughout the country during the day,” the advisory notes.
U.S. Senator Marco Rubio also echoed the importance of the announcement, stating:
“Keeping Americans safe overseas is our highest priority. President @nayibbukele’s leadership has been crucial in improving the security of his country for foreign travelers. Gang activity, violent crime, and murders in El Salvador have significantly dropped.”
This Level 1 classification is expected to boost international tourism and investment in El Salvador, further reinforcing the country’s progress toward stability and global recognition.
