President Bukele Sets Bold Goal for El Salvador’s Safety: Homicide Rate Under 1.

El Salvador has reported a historic reduction in its homicide rate, decreasing from 106.3 murders per 100,000 inhabitants in 2015 to just 1.9 in 2024, according to World of Statistics.

This dramatic decline is credited to security measures implemented under President Nayib Bukele, including the Territorial Control Plan and the State of Exception, which have led to the arrest of 84,260 gang members and the recovery of territories once controlled by criminal groups.

President Bukele, known for his globally recognized strategies and high approval ratings, responded to the data by stating, “This year, our homicide rate will be below one,” reaffirming his commitment to eradicating violence.

As of January 28, El Salvador has recorded 24 homicide-free days in 2025, bringing the total to 818 days without murders nationwide.

This transformation has positioned El Salvador as a global example in the fight against crime, boosting tourism and investment.
