El Salvador has recorded a significant reduction in traffic-related deaths during the Christmas and New Year period of 2024. According to the Ministry of Public Works (MOP), deaths from road accidents were 26% lower compared to the same period in 2023. El Salvador’s Traffic Reforms Bring Holiday Season Safety Success.
Romeo Rodríguez, the head of the MOP, reported that between December 23 and 31, there were 12 fewer fatalities from traffic accidents. In addition to this reduction in deaths, there was also a decline in the number of accidents and injuries. Road accidents decreased by 13%, with 60 fewer incidents, while injuries fell by 25%, amounting to 80 fewer injuries.
Rodríguez attributed this positive trend to recent reforms to traffic laws, which include stricter penalties and a zero-tolerance policy for driving under the influence of alcohol. He emphasized that the primary goal of these reforms is to protect the lives of the Salvadoran population on the roads.
“As a result of the reforms to the Transportation Law and the Penal Code, we have seen a decrease in both injuries and fatalities,” Rodríguez stated. “These legal changes are essential to safeguarding the lives of our citizens.” El Salvador’s Stricter Traffic Laws Contribute to Fewer Holiday Road Accidents.
Additionally, the MOP confirmed the arrest of seven drivers on December 31, who tested positive for alcohol. They will face penalties under the newly enacted regulations. This reduction in road fatalities marks a step forward in ensuring safer roads for all Salvadorans.
