President Bukele Inaugurates El Salvador’s Largest Infrastructure Project: The Gerardo Barrios Ring Road.

Today, President Nayib Bukele inaugurated the Gerardo Barrios Ring Road, marking the completion of the largest infrastructure project in El Salvador’s history. This historic project, with an investment of $160 million, is set to revolutionize the eastern part of the country by improving connectivity, boosting economic development, and enhancing the quality of life for thousands of Salvadorans.

Stretching over 21 kilometers, the Gerardo Barrios Ring Road features four bridges and seven overpasses, designed to improve regional mobility and trade. The road benefits more than 15,000 vehicles daily and significantly reduces travel time between key districts in San Miguel. What once took up to an hour now only takes about 20 minutes, easing local traffic congestion.

The project also connects El Salvador to neighboring Honduras and Nicaragua, reinforcing regional trade and competitiveness. The addition of two bridges over the Grande and Taisihuat rivers ensures a safer flow of traffic in the area, further contributing to the country’s infrastructure development.

Ambassador Yoshitaka Hoshino of Japan, which contributed $164 million to the project, expressed his pride in the collaboration, stating, “It is an honor for me to be part of a large-scale project. Our country has contributed to the Salvadoran Government in many areas.”

The Gerardo Barrios Ring Road represents a major leap forward in the modernization of El Salvador’s road network, promoting economic and social progress for the entire nation.
