CIIE 2024: A Gateway for Salvadoran Coffee into China’s Growing Market.

El Salvador’s coffee industry is making strides to establish itself in China, with representatives participating in the 7th China International Import Expo (CIIE), held in Shanghai from November 5-10. This global event, a key platform for international trade, offers an equitable space for Latin American small and medium-sized enterprises to enter the highly competitive Chinese market.

Mauricio Sansivirini, President of the Salvadoran Coffee Institute (ISC), highlighted that the delegation’s main goal is to promote “El Salvador’s coffee brand and our coffee culture” on an international stage. With over 200 years of coffee production experience, the country has a unique edge in quality and expertise in both agricultural practices and post-harvest processes, Sansivirini explained.

El Salvador’s participation in CIIE also underscores the event’s role in fostering fair trade opportunities. The expo provides an invaluable chance for both small and large companies to compete on equal terms. According to Manuel Vindel, ISC’s Manager of Improvement and Industrialization, El Salvador’s coffee has generated high expectations at CIIE. “China’s emerging market will enable Salvadoran producers to reach a new specialty coffee market,” Vindel noted.

El Salvador’s coffee, especially varieties like Pacamara, Bourbon, and Cuscatleco, is renowned for its sweetness, citrus, and fruity notes, making it a sought-after choice among discerning coffee consumers. “Our commitment to consistent quality allows us to compete in emerging markets like China,” Vindel affirmed.

This year’s CIIE spans over 420,000 square meters and hosts exhibitors from 152 countries, regions, and international organizations. For El Salvador, this event represents an unparalleled opportunity for growth and visibility in the global coffee sector.
