UN Assembly: How El Salvador Became a Symbol of Hope and Security.

In a powerful address at the 79th United Nations General Assembly, President Nayib Bukele proclaimed that «El Salvador was reborn» as a safe country, positioning it as a beacon of peace amidst global violence and insecurity. He emphasized the transformation of El Salvador into the safest nation in the Western Hemisphere, despite its small geographical size.

Reflecting on the significant changes over the past five years, Bukele contrasted his first appearance at the UN in 2019, when El Salvador was known primarily for its high levels of violence, with the current narrative of safety and opportunity. «Five years after that first speech, I come here as president of a country that now has a voice in the world,» he stated.

The president highlighted that El Salvador has become a refuge for those seeking peace and security, especially as Western societies grapple with rising violence and social crises. He noted the resurgence of tourism, with the country now hosting international events in surfing, sports, and entertainment.

Bukele also emphasized the respect for freedom of expression in El Salvador, asserting that the government does not imprison dissenters or censor opinions. He highlighted the country’s commitment to protecting citizens’ rights and freedoms, asserting, «In El Salvador, your freedom of expression, as well as your private property, will always be protected.»

As he addressed the challenges faced by other nations, Bukele declared, «We cannot prevent the dark times that are coming. But what we can do is turn ourselves into a little refuge.» He noted that while the world becomes increasingly dangerous, El Salvador stands out as a model of optimism and safety.

The president’s speech painted a picture of a transformed nation, ready to welcome those seeking opportunities in technology, arts, culture, and more. «A few years ago, El Salvador was one of the darkest places on the planet. But we managed to be reborn. Today, El Salvador is a safe country for innovation and family,» he concluded, inviting the world to experience the changes firsthand.
