Pierre Bonhomme, a Canadian Bitcoin enthusiast and businessman, has found a new home and a fresh perspective in Berlin, Usulután, a town flourishing with a Bitcoin-centric circular economy. Originally from Ontario, Canada, Bonhomme is one of 16 foreigners who have relocated to this Salvadoran city to immerse themselves in its innovative digital currency ecosystem.
Arriving just five months ago, Bonhomme, who runs multiple tourism businesses in Canada, was drawn to El Salvador by its burgeoning Bitcoin community. Disenchanted with Canada’s financial system and governance, Bonhomme had been exploring Bitcoin for two years. His fascination with the digital currency led him to consider relocating, and after a brief visit, he decided to make Berlin his permanent home.
“It makes sense to me to live here,” Bonhomme said. “El Salvador is experiencing a renaissance, and Berlin embodies that transformation perfectly.”
In his new life, Bonhomme lives by a strict Bitcoin standard, using the cryptocurrency for all his transactions. From paying for rent and utilities to dining out and renting cars, he exclusively uses Bitcoin, supporting local businesses that accept it. When faced with establishments that don’t yet accept Bitcoin, Bonhomme uses the opportunity to educate them about digital wallets, often leaving a tip as a thank you for considering Bitcoin payments.
“Berlin is not a tourist city like El Zonte,” Bonhomme noted. “It offers a more functional and normal lifestyle, which is exactly what I was looking for.”
Bonhomme is not only settling in but also planning to contribute further to the local economy. He intends to apply for permanent residence soon and aims to relocate part of his operations to Berlin. His vision includes developing Bitcoin tourism in the area, with plans for fitness events and other attractions designed to attract more visitors and further integrate Bitcoin into the local community.
As Berlin, Usulután continues to evolve, it is clear that pioneers like Pierre Bonhomme are playing a key role in shaping the future of digital currency in the region.
