President Bukele Calls for Government Accountability to Ensure a Virtuous Legacy.

In a recent meeting with his Extended Cabinet, President Nayib Bukele made significant announcements just days before requesting a 6-month leave to focus on the 2024 election campaign.

«As you all know, in a few days, I will request a leave from the Salvadoran Congress to dedicate myself to the campaign, and I will not be in office as President. I wanted to have a meeting before to address a couple of issues that I believe are important,» stated President Nayib Bukele.

During the meeting, the President informed his Cabinet officials that government oversight would be intensified throughout the duration of his upcoming leave. He called on the Republic’s Attorney General to investigate each member of his Cabinet to ensure the proper conduct during their tenure and the correct execution of their duties until the current term concludes on May 30, 2024.

«All of us here belong to the Executive Branch, with one exception, the Attorney General of the Republic. I want to publicly request an investigation into everyone here, both past and present. I imagine there shouldn’t be any issue with that,» President Nayib Bukele stated.

Emphasizing the commitment to transparency and justice, President Bukele expressed the goal of leaving behind a «correct legacy.» He highlighted his aversion to being remembered as part of a government that misappropriated state funds, setting his administration apart from previous ones tainted by corruption scandals.

«There is one thing I am afraid of, and that is leaving a bad legacy. Some presidents are in prison, others are fugitives, but the majority are remembered as thieves. I do not want to be remembered as a thief. So, I do not steal because I do not want to be remembered as a thief or a corrupt leader,» President Bukele emphasized.

As President Bukele prepares for his temporary departure, these measures underscore his commitment to ethical governance and a legacy untarnished by allegations of corruption. The move is likely to set a precedent for increased scrutiny and accountability within the Salvadoran government.
