Costa Rican President Laura Fernández visited El Salvador’s Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT) as part of her official visit, gaining firsthand insight into the country’s prison infrastructure and security strategy under President Nayib Bukele.
According to the Presidential Palace, Fernández traveled to the high-security facility after arriving at El Salvador International Airport, where she was formally welcomed. Upon reaching CECOT, she was received by Defense Minister René Francis Merino Monroy and Security Minister Gustavo Villatoro.
The visit highlights the growing regional interest in El Salvador’s approach to combating organized crime and managing high-risk inmates. The country’s security policies have attracted international attention as other governments explore strategies to address criminal violence and strengthen public safety.
Fernández’s visit also underscores the importance of bilateral cooperation between El Salvador and Costa Rica, providing an opportunity to exchange perspectives on security challenges and institutional responses across Central America.
The engagement reflects the expanding role of security cooperation in regional relations, as both countries seek approaches to improve public safety and confront organized criminal networks.
