El Salvador Emerges as Top Travel Destination: International Arrivals Surpass 2026 Projections.

El Salvador has solidified its position as a rising star in the global travel industry, closing the 2026 Holy Week season with record-breaking statistics that far exceeded government expectations. According to the Ministry of Tourism, the country welcomed 208,000 international visitors by the end of the holiday period, marking a significant increase from the 130,000 recorded in 2025. This surge represents a 35 percent jump over the initial projections, signaling a robust appetite for the nation’s diverse landscapes and cultural offerings.

While regional neighbors continue to lead the influx, the United States has maintained a strong presence, accounting for 17 percent of all international arrivals. This growing interest from North American travelers is a direct result of enhanced connectivity and a shift in the country’s global perception. Morena Valdez, the Minister of Tourism, emphasized that the current success is a byproduct of deliberate planning, stating that these results reflect the impact of tourism promotion strategies and the investment in infrastructure that we are driving as a Government.

The geographical distribution of visitors highlights a blend of urban revitalization and coastal appeal. The Historic Center of San Salvador has become the crown jewel of Salvadoran tourism, attracting over 686,000 local and foreign visitors. Following closely behind are the world-renowned Surf City circuits in La Libertad and the eastern region, alongside the modern National Library (Binaes). This variety ensures that El Salvador appeals to a wide demographic, from professional surfers to history enthusiasts and families seeking safe, modern public spaces.

The government’s focus on specialized tourism has also played a pivotal role in this year’s success. The «Family Friendly» seal, an initiative promoted by First Lady Gabriela de Bukele, has been implemented across major hubs like the Ruta de las Flores. Destinations like Apaneca have seen a resurgence in popularity, offering a blend of traditional gastronomy and live music in a secure, mist-covered mountain environment. This emphasis on accessibility and safety has allowed the country to position itself as a reliable and attractive destination within the Central American region.

Looking forward, the Ministry of Tourism views these figures as a sign of a sustained upward trend. With a total of 1.8 million people visiting public, cultural, and natural sites—a 27 percent increase compared to the previous year—the sector is proving to be a vital engine for the national economy. As Valdez noted during her final report of the season, we continue to position El Salvador as an attractive and safe destination in the region, which is reflected in the sustained growth of international visitors.
