Ilamatepec Volcano Emerges as a Top Easter Destination in El Salvador

The Ilamatepec Volcano, the highest volcano in El Salvador, is gaining increasing recognition as one of the country’s most attractive destinations for both local and international visitors during the Easter holiday season.

Rising 2,381 meters above sea level, Ilamatepec offers a unique hiking experience surrounded by diverse flora, fresh mountain air, and panoramic views. The trail, which typically begins at Cerro Verde Natural Park, is accessible for beginners with a basic level of fitness, making it one of the most popular hiking routes in the country.

The full hike ranges between 7 to 9 kilometers round trip, with an average ascent time of approximately two hours. Upon reaching the summit, visitors are rewarded with breathtaking scenery, including the volcano’s iconic turquoise crater lake, along with views of the Izalco Volcano and Lake Coatepeque.
