Leaders from across the Western Hemisphere gathered in Miami, Florida, for the Shield of the Americas Summit, where a new regional initiative aimed at dismantling criminal cartels was formally announced. The initiative includes the creation of the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition, a military partnership designed to coordinate efforts against transnational criminal organizations. El Salvador participated in the summit, highlighting its growing influence in regional security discussions.
During the event, the President of the United States announced the formation of the coalition as part of a broader framework known as the Shield of the Americas. “On this historic day, we come together to announce a brand new military coalition to eradicate the criminal cartels plaguing our region,” he said. “We’re calling this military partnership the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition.”
The initiative also includes a proclamation signed by leaders committing to counter cartel criminal activity throughout the hemisphere. According to officials, the agreement seeks to strengthen cooperation between governments on security, intelligence sharing, and coordinated responses to organized crime networks operating across borders.
El Salvador’s participation stands out as the country has gained international attention for its aggressive security policies in recent years. Salvadoran authorities have promoted their experience in confronting criminal organizations as a model that could contribute to broader regional strategies aimed at restoring stability and strengthening the rule of law.
During the summit, the U.S. president also acknowledged El Salvador’s leadership while speaking about President Nayib Bukele. “He runs a good operation, that’s all I care about,” he said, referring to the country’s security strategy and its results in combating organized crime.
