El Salvador to Lead Regional Dialogue on Hunger, Innovation, and Sustainable Farming at FAO 2028.

El Salvador has been selected to host the 40th Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 2028, marking a significant milestone in the country’s growing international engagement. The announcement was made during the current regional summit held in Brazil, where Salvadoran officials reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening agricultural systems and food security across the hemisphere.

The FAO Regional Conference serves as a high-level platform where member states define priorities and coordinate action to confront shared challenges in food production, nutrition, and rural development. By bringing the 2028 edition to San Salvador, the country positions itself at the center of discussions on climate resilience, agricultural innovation, and inclusive economic growth — issues that resonate strongly across the Americas.

Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Adriana Mira emphasized the region’s strategic importance in addressing global hunger. Latin America and the Caribbean possesses enormous potential to contribute decisively to global food security. That potential becomes reality when we strengthen our productive systems with strategic vision, effective cooperation, and stable environments that allow investment and production with confidence, she said during her address.

Mira added that El Salvador aims to use the 2028 conference to deepen partnerships, expand technical cooperation with the FAO, and help shape a transformative regional agenda. We reaffirm our commitment to effective multilateralism, results-based technical cooperation, and to a FAO that remains close to the realities of our territories, she stated. Salvadoran representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and the country’s diplomatic mission to the FAO also participated in the proceedings.

For U.S. observers and investors, the selection signals El Salvador’s intention to play a proactive role in regional stability and agricultural modernization. As climate pressures intensify and food systems face mounting global demands, the 2028 FAO conference in San Salvador is expected to spotlight practical solutions — from sustainable production models to resilience strategies — that could strengthen cooperation between the United States and Central America.
