Public Opinion in El Salvador Signals Broad Support for Presidential Continuity.

A majority of Salvadorans currently favor allowing presidential reelection without term limits, according to a new national survey that offers an early glimpse into the country’s political climate ahead of the 2027 elections.

The poll, conducted by LPG Datos between January 19 and 25, 2026, surveyed 1,200 adults nationwide through random sampling. Results show that 55.7 percent of respondents support unlimited presidential reelection. Another 22.8 percent said they favor reelection under certain restrictions, such as prohibiting immediate consecutive terms. Only 12.1 percent expressed opposition to any form of reelection.

Beyond the headline figure, the data suggests that support for presidential continuity extends across demographic lines. Backing for reelection without limits appears consistent across age groups and between men and women, indicating no significant generational or gender divide on the issue.

As El Salvador moves closer to the 2027 electoral cycle, the findings point to a political environment in which the idea of extended presidential mandates holds broad social legitimacy. For observers in the United States tracking democratic trends in the region, the survey underscores how public opinion in El Salvador continues to shape the country’s evolving constitutional and electoral debate.
