El Salvador Begins Metrocable Project to Transform Public Transport in San Salvador.

El Salvador will soon begin construction on a metrocable system aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving public transport in Greater San Salvador, Minister of Public Works Romeo Rodríguez announced during an interview on Frente a Frente.

“In the case of the cable car or metrocable, we have a contract with a company to develop this first system that will improve the flow in Mejicanos, connecting with the University of El Salvador, the Government Center area, and reaching a section of the Historic Center, near Cuscatlán Park. We are making significant progress with this project,” Rodríguez said.

The minister explained that part of the equipment has already arrived in the country, and work is underway on towers and deep foundations that will support the gondolas. “We are working hard to make this a reality. The project will take approximately 18 months to complete. Civil works are about to begin, with focus on deep foundations and tower structures,” he added.

Rodríguez noted that the project is financed with national funds, alongside support from the European Union and the Inter-American Development Bank. The metrocable, a cable car-style passenger system, is expected to ease north-south traffic across the capital.

The minister also revealed that new bus bays are being designed across major corridors, including Manuel Enrique Araujo Avenue, Constitution Boulevard, and Ejército Boulevard, as well as areas in Santa Tecla. “If we create bus bays in different points of the metropolitan area, we can save at least 20 minutes of travel time,” Rodríguez said, adding that the renewal of outdated bus units is also part of the government’s transport modernization plan.
