Panchimalco’s Iconic Flower-Making Tradition Showcased in Russia.

The vibrant traditions of El Salvador reached new ground in Moscow as children took part in a hands-on workshop inspired by the Cofradía de las Flores y las Palmas, a cherished expression of Salvadoran intangible cultural heritage. Held at Hermitage Garden during the Festival of Latin American and Caribbean Culture, the event showcased the colorful artistry and symbolism that characterize the district of Panchimalco in southern San Salvador.

Organized by the Moscow City Government, the workshop aimed to share with Russian youth the handmade craft of crepe paper flowers, which are central to the Feria de las Flores y las Palmas celebrated in May in Panchimalco. These ornaments, rich in spiritual meaning and devotion, have been passed down through generations and are integral to Salvadoran religious festivities and popular traditions.

Participants first attended a cultural talk that highlighted the value and significance of the tradition. They then moved on to create their own ensarta flowers, guided through the techniques used to bring these paper creations to life.

“This activity connects young people not only with art but with the spirit of Salvadoran identity,” said Yuri Santacruz, El Salvador’s ambassador to the Russian Federation, who presided over the event. Officials from the Moscow Government and El Salvador’s diplomatic mission also attended the celebration.
