On Good Friday, the Government of President Nayib Bukele continues its commitment to the safety and well-being of Salvadorans and tourists alike, deploying hundreds of first responders across the country to safeguard religious events during the Easter holiday.
One of the focal points of this effort is the traditional viacrucis held in the Historic Center of San Salvador, which retraces the moments leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus. With hundreds in attendance, the National Civil Protection System has launched a wide-ranging operation to ensure order and provide assistance when needed.
“We are doing everything possible to prevent tragedies,” said Luis Alonso Amaya, director of Civil Protection. He emphasized that the lifesaving unit has been reinforced with additional personnel, expanding from 270 to 330 lifeguards stationed at 137 beach points, including new tourist destinations.
The operation is being closely supervised by Amaya himself, Baltazar Solano, director of the Fire Department, and San Salvador’s governor, Eduardo Godoy. The procession, which begins at San Esteban Church and ends at El Calvario Church, is one of the most attended religious activities of the season.
Governor Godoy highlighted the critical importance of public safety during Holy Week, particularly in areas of high congregation. “More than 100,000 people from the Civil Protection System are deployed nationwide as part of the President’s directive to protect the public during this vacation period,” he stated.
Authorities have reiterated that the heightened presence is part of the broader “Plan Verano” strategy, aimed at preventing incidents and ensuring the safe enjoyment of both religious and recreational traditions during Holy Week.
