El Salvador is making strides in promoting environmental sustainability in its coffee sector through a new collaboration between the Salvadoran Coffee Institute (ISC) and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN). Recently, the two organizations signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance the coffee industry’s capacity to adopt sustainable practices, while improving ecosystem services provided by coffee plantations.
Sustainability and Environmental Practices in El Salvador’s Coffee Industry
The ISC emphasized the importance of integrating environmental sustainability in coffee farming: «This initiative seeks to promote agricultural management practices that respect the environment and reinforce the conservation of natural resources, recognizing the vital role of the coffee forest in protecting biodiversity, regulating water, and preserving soils.»
This partnership between the ISC and MARN marks a significant step toward strengthening the coffee sector’s sustainability, offering benefits both nationally and internationally. By using instruments from the National Program of Environmental Incentives and Disincentives, the goal is to encourage coffee producers to transition to environmentally friendly production models.
Incentives for Coffee Growers Who Adopt Sustainable Practices
The agreement outlines actions aimed at fostering better environmental practices within coffee plantations. These actions include strengthening the provision of ecosystem services, recognizing good practices on coffee farms, and offering environmental incentives to coffee growers who demonstrate sustainable land management techniques.
Strengthening El Salvador’s Global Coffee Competitiveness
Additionally, the partnership will focus on verifying the types of coffee plantations covered by the agreement. The MARN will facilitate the issuance of certificates of cover type for farm owners, while the ISC will provide exporters with the necessary documents to support the marketing and export of sustainably grown coffee products. This initiative not only promotes environmental conservation but also aims to boost the sector’s competitiveness on the global coffee market.
