State of Emergency Extended in El Salvador to Continue the Fight Against Crime.

The Legislative Assembly of El Salvador has approved a new 30-day extension of the exceptional regime, a constitutional measure aimed at maintaining security and stability across the nation. The extension was approved with 57 votes in favor out of 60, with support from the Nuevas Ideas, PCN, and PDC parties. The Vamos party voted against the measure, while ARENA abstained.

The Council of Ministers formally requested the extension, citing the continued need to uphold security and order in communities historically plagued by gang violence. The exceptional regime was initially established by Legislative Decree No. 333 on March 27, 2022, following a surge in homicides across the country’s 14 departments. Since its implementation, the measure has remained in effect for over three years, serving as a key instrument in the government’s security strategy.

Authorities credit the Territorial Control Plan (PCT) and the state of emergency with achieving significant progress in combating crime. These measures have resulted in a drastic decline in homicide rates, the arrest of over 85,000 gang members, and the reclamation of territories previously controlled by criminal organizations. Furthermore, the initiative has played a crucial role in curbing common and organized crime, as well as combating local and international drug trafficking.

The Salvadoran government remains committed to ensuring lasting peace and stability in the nation, emphasizing that these security measures are necessary to protect citizens and dismantle criminal networks that have long destabilized the country.
