The inaugural meeting of the Network of Metropolitan Cities of Central America and the Caribbean 2025 recently took place, bringing together key stakeholders, international partners, and high-ranking officials from the Central Government. Organized in collaboration with the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (@AMB_MetroGlobal) and strategic partners, this event marked a significant step towards the integration and development of metropolitan areas in the region.
The meeting, hosted by @COAMSS_OPAMSS, provided a platform for productive exchanges on projects aimed at enhancing regional cooperation. The discussions were backed by the technical and financial support of multilateral banks and international organizations. According to @MariaPeix1, Head of Cooperation at the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, the Network is crucial in driving the effective integration and joint development of Central America and the Caribbean.
Notable speakers included Belinda Carías, Country Director of @BCIE_Org for Honduras, who emphasized the importance of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and competitive production in fostering economic growth within cities. She also highlighted the role of sustainable transportation, the utilization of natural capital, and the execution of impactful social development projects for the region’s citizens. Olga Gómez, representative of @el_BID in El Salvador, echoed these sentiments, focusing on the potential for strategic partnerships between Central American and Caribbean cities and multilateral banks to further tourism development.
The Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, @AdrianaMiraSV, spoke on the critical factors contributing to Central American integration, including competitive trade, transport infrastructure, and modernized logistics. She emphasized that these elements are essential to advancing regional cooperation.
During the meeting, @LuisRodriguez, Executive Director of @COAMSS_OPAMSS, shared the strategic vision and progress of the Metropolitan Area of San Salvador, highlighting its potential as a model for other cities in the region to replicate in their efforts toward integration and development.
This first meeting set the stage for further collaboration and the realization of shared goals to strengthen metropolitan areas and improve the lives of Central American and Caribbean citizens through joint projects and sustained regional cooperation.
