El Salvador’s Vice Ministry of Transportation launched a photo radar enforcement system today on the Comalapa Highway, aiming to enhance road safety and protect lives.
The maximum speed limit on the Comalapa Highway is set at 110 km/h (68 mph) for private vehicles and 80 km/h (50 mph) for freight transport. These measures aim to ensure a safer experience for all drivers, particularly along this vital route to El Salvador’s International Airport.
“Starting at 12:00 a.m., the photo radar system on the Comalapa Highway issued eight citations for speeding, with recorded speeds averaging 120 km/h (75 mph),” announced Vice Minister Nelson Reyes.
The initiative emphasizes strict adherence to traffic rules, including respecting speed limits and ensuring heavy vehicles over 15 tons remain in the right lane. An automatic weighing system has also been implemented for freight transport compliance.
To improve safety in populated areas, such as near the Terminal del Sur and Olocuilta, speed limits have been set at 90 km/h (56 mph).
The Vice Minister clarified the program’s preventive nature: “We’ve installed six photo radar devices on the Comalapa Highway, three in each direction. Our aim is not to issue fines but to encourage safer driving behaviors.”
Initial results on the Monseñor Romero Boulevard show a decline in violations after the system’s activation, highlighting its effectiveness in fostering safer mobility practices.
Drivers are urged to observe vertical and horizontal signage and comply with traffic regulations for a secure journey.
