In response to the economic strain experienced by many Salvadorans following the holiday season and the typically slower economic activity at the beginning of the year, President Nayib Bukele has announced a significant relief measure aimed at alleviating financial pressures on the population.
Recognizing the impact of December expenses and the sluggish economic start in January, the government will cover the entirety of water and electricity bills for 95% of households. The initiative aims to provide immediate financial relief, helping families manage their essential expenses during this challenging period.
“For January, the Government will pay the totality of water and electricity bills for 95% of the population. The electricity bill coverage will extend up to $80, and for water bills, up to $30,” stated President Bukele.
President Bukele emphasized that this relief measure is exclusively for households. “The payment benefit for water and electricity bills provided by the Government applies only to households. Businesses, commercial establishments, government entities, and shopping centers are not included,” he clarified.
This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to supporting the well-being of its citizens during times of financial difficulty, ensuring that essential services remain accessible to the majority of the population.
