Macarena Olona: El Salvador’s Security Model is a ‘Beacon’ for the World.

Spanish lawyer and politician Macarena Olona has expressed her admiration for the transformative security policies implemented by President Nayib Bukele, calling El Salvador a «world beacon» for its success in combating gang violence and restoring public safety.

Speaking at the International Conference on State and Democracy (CIED 2024), Olona highlighted how Bukele’s security model has brought El Salvador to the brink of eliminating gangs, dramatically reducing crime rates that once plagued the country with homicides, extortions, and threats.

“As President Nayib Bukele says: ‘Let no one tell you that because you are a small country, you cannot achieve great things,’” Olona remarked. “El Salvador has always been the beacon of Central America, but today, you are a beacon for millions of people worldwide who see that with determination, political will, and a courageous leader, change is possible.”

Olona also referenced President Bukele’s support for Spain during its recent crisis, highlighting that while world leaders around them expressed condolences for Spain’s struggles, Bukele went a step further. He offered not only his condolences but also the support of Salvadoran forces to assist the Spanish people.

“I’m certain that I’m in the right place, standing alongside the miraculous change El Salvador is experiencing,” Olona continued. “My connection is with the Bukele security model. When you love the people, you protect them.»

Her comments further solidify El Salvador’s growing international recognition as a leader in security reform, with Bukele’s policies offering a new model for countries seeking to tackle crime and promote public safety.
