Bitcoin soared past $76,000 yesterday, hitting an all-time high of $76,348.12, driven by the political developments in the United States following the victory of Donald Trump in the presidential elections. The digital currency, which has been legal tender in El Salvador since September 2021, surpassed its previous peak of $75,371 reached just the night before.
According to CoinMarketCap data, the cryptocurrency broke the $76,000 barrier around 2:00 p.m. EST, before moderating slightly to stabilize at $75,801 by the close of trading. This increase represents a notable 10.04% jump, reflecting a broader market rally following the release of early election results that showed Trump leading in several key battleground states.
Trump’s strong performance in states such as North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, as well as his win in Texas and Ohio, appeared to have a direct impact on Bitcoin’s price. The former president’s pledge during his campaign to make the U.S. “the capital of cryptocurrencies” and create a favorable regulatory environment for digital assets fueled investor optimism.
“Bitcoin is one of the main assets at the center of exchanges on the night of the American election: it is relatively liquid and extremely dependent on the result of the vote count,” said Fredrick Collins of the VeloData platform. “The rise in price is closely associated with Trump’s victory,” he added.
Cynthia Lummis, Republican senator from Wyoming, also signaled support for the cryptocurrency market, stating that a future Trump administration would build a “strategic reserve of bitcoin.”
Bitcoin’s surge also reflects broader market trends, including speculation around the “halving” event scheduled for next year, which reduces the supply of new bitcoins. Additionally, the launch of a new investment product in the U.S. earlier this year, allowing investors to profit from Bitcoin price fluctuations without owning the currency directly, has further boosted demand.
For many investors, a Trump victory is seen as a positive signal for the future of digital currencies, with the potential for a more favorable regulatory framework under his leadership.
As Bitcoin continues to climb, it remains at the forefront of a global conversation about the future of digital finance, with the U.S. presidential outcome playing a pivotal role in shaping market sentiment.
