El Salvador is poised to welcome a record 4 million international visitors by the end of 2024, driven by a robust tourism sector that has already seen over 2.9 million visitors this year, marking a significant milestone for the country’s tourism industry.
As of September, the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur) has reported that more than 71% of its projected goal for tourist arrivals in 2024 has already been achieved. This remarkable growth prompted Mitur to raise its forecast from an initial estimate of 3.8 million visitors to a new target of 4 million.
“We had calculated 3.8 million visitors for this year, but we have set ourselves the challenge of 4 million,” said Minister of Tourism, Morena Valdez. “These next three months are high season, and we have several international events lined up across our beautiful beaches and vibrant cities.”
Most of the tourists arriving in El Salvador come from the United States, Guatemala, and Honduras, with notable increases in visitors from South America and Europe. The recent Morazanic Week holiday saw an influx of Honduran tourists, who explored popular destinations such as the Historic Center, La Libertad beaches, Ilamatepec, and Coatepeque.
Eny Aguiñada, president of the Salvadoran Institute of Tourism (ISTU), echoed this optimism, stating, “We are going for good numbers. The final season is coming with an important schedule in the different national parks. We hope that the diaspora will join us again, as well as other visitors from around the world who enjoy El Salvador very much.”
The ongoing influx of tourists is not only enhancing the country’s reputation as a premier travel destination but also contributing to job creation and the improvement of living conditions in the most frequented areas.
In addition to the growth in international visitors, El Salvador is set to kick off its new cruise season. Minister Valdez announced plans to collaborate with the Autonomous Executive Port Commission (CEPA) to welcome cruise ship arrivals in the coming months. “October, November, and December are when we are busiest,” she added.
With the combination of favorable conditions and strategic promotions, El Salvador is solidifying its status as a top global travel destination, and the tourism sector remains optimistic about reaching new heights in the coming months.
