El Salvador has achieved a significant milestone in the latest Gallup Global Security Report, ranking eighth among countries where residents feel safer today than a decade ago when walking alone at night. This remarkable shift in perception comes as President Nayib Bukele reacts to the findings of the 2024 report, which includes data from the 2023 Global Law and Order Index.
According to the report, an impressive 88% of Salvadorans expressed feeling safe walking at night in their cities, positioning El Salvador ahead of many European nations. Bukele emphasized this achievement, highlighting that, within the Western Hemisphere, only Norway and Slovenia rank higher.
«So, of the Western countries, Norway is the only one in the top 10? Are you paying attention?» Bukele remarked on his X account, sharing the Gallup post that outlined the rankings. Countries such as Kuwait (99%), Singapore (94%), and the United Arab Emirates (90%) topped the list, but El Salvador’s emergence in the top ten marks a historic achievement in national security.
Gallup’s report underscores a broader global trend, noting that while many countries have made strides in safety, a significant number still face challenges in achieving the «peaceful societies» essential for sustainable development.
This newfound sense of security in El Salvador reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance citizen safety and stability, signaling a hopeful future for the nation.
