The cargo movement at El Salvador International Airport has experienced a remarkable 20% increase in the first 28 days of January 2024, according to the latest report from the Autonomous Port Executive Commission (CEPA). The airport’s cargo terminal played a pivotal role in handling 2.2 million kilograms of imports and exports during this period.
CEPA highlighted the crucial economic contribution of the airport’s cargo terminal to the country’s development. Situated strategically in Central America and boasting connectivity with major international markets, the terminal has become a vital hub for trade, fostering economic growth.
Statistics released by CEPA revealed that between January 1st and 28th, 2024, the cargo terminal facilitated the movement of 2.2 million kilograms, marking a substantial 20% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This surge is attributed to the collaboration with eight airlines operating within the platform, including Amerijet, Copa Cargo, Transportes Aéreos de Guatemala, UPS, DHL, and FedEx.
Looking ahead, CEPA President Federico Anliker announced plans for the arrival of new cargo airlines in the country, anticipating a boost in the transportation of both export and import goods. Anliker emphasized ongoing efforts to attract additional cargo airlines and shared recent discussions with a prospective company interested in operating in El Salvador, reinforcing the nation’s position as a burgeoning logistics hub.
«We are already attracting more cargo to our country, aiming to be a logistical cargo hub in El Salvador. We are on the right path, and there is significant interest. Investment opportunities are expanding in the aviation sector,» stated Anliker.
In a significant move towards modernization, CEPA, in partnership with Adimex, acquired state-of-the-art Dual View X-ray equipment last year. Compliant with international operational standards, the technology enhances cargo processing efficiency while ensuring security. This acquisition is part of the government’s broader strategy to implement top-tier processes at the terminal, further establishing El Salvador as a regional powerhouse.
As El Salvador continues to position itself as a key player in the global trade network, the surge in cargo movement and ongoing modernization efforts at the airport signify promising prospects for economic development in the region.
