In its ongoing effort to enhance the mobility of Salvadorans and foster economic development, the Government of El Salvador is set to embark on the construction of the Apopa bypass this year. The project aims to reduce travel times and stimulate economic growth by undertaking comprehensive renovations of key roads across the country.
Alex Beltrán, the Executive Director of the Road Conservation Fund, revealed that construction on the Apopa bypass, located north of San Salvador, is slated to commence this year. The ambitious plan includes the complete overhaul of the Troncal del Norte highway by the second quarter of 2024.
Beltrán outlined that the environmental impact study and resettlement plan for the Apopa bypass construction are currently in the bidding process. This collaborative initiative with the Ministry of Public Works will connect the Carretera de Oro and Troncal del Norte, effectively easing traffic flow in the area.
“The environmental impact assessment and resettlement plan for the Apopa bypass construction are currently in the bidding process. The project, developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works, will connect the Carretera de Oro and Troncal del Norte, facilitating smoother traffic flow,” stated Beltrán.
He further detailed that the comprehensive rehabilitation of the stretch leading to the completion of the Apopa bypass, currently in the bidding phase, is scheduled for the second quarter of this year. This particular section extends to the El Coyolito diversion, leading to the highlands of Chalatenango.
The Apopa bypass project is expected to benefit approximately 35,000 drivers navigating the area, enhancing connectivity for cargo vehicles. These vehicles will now have a direct route between the Carretera de Oro and Troncal del Norte, bypassing the need to traverse through the municipality of Apopa.
Beltrán highlighted that the project’s scope includes the complete renovation of the Troncal del Norte, from the endpoint of the bypass project to the El Coyolito diversion. “There is a route that has surpassed its lifespan, and performing maintenance may prove more costly compared to making a definitive investment,” commented the official.
The Government’s commitment to providing El Salvador with well-maintained roads demonstrates its dedication to improving the quality of life for Salvadoran families and facilitating the timely movement of goods, ultimately alleviating traffic congestion in the country’s major urban areas.
